Original Design

United Nations Building United Nations Building
The United Nations Headquarters complex, situated on New York City's East River, consists of the 39-story Secretariat, the five-story Conference Building, the General Assembly building, and the Library. Syska Hennessy Group designed the mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems for all the original buildings. Included were broadcasting and television booths, several radio studios, conference and committee rooms, a master control room for the communications system serving the entire headquarters, and a central refrigeration plant to serve all buildings in the complex. In order to provide necessary additional seating capacity for an increasing number of new member nations, Syska Hennessy Group was again engaged, in 1977, to design extensive alterations involving the General Assembly and the Conference building. Since the original design and expansion of the complex Syska Hennessy Group has completed numerous projects for the United Nations which are listed below:

Capital Master Plan
Our most recent project, awarded in June 2001, consists of a six-year implementation of a master plan to upgrade and modernize the entire four million square foot complex.

General Assembly Hall

General Assembly Hall General Assembly Hall
Syska Hennessy recently completed an exciting project at the United Nations in which we were prime; leading a team of architects and engineers in the renovation and restoration of the General Assembly Hall. During the design phase, we were responsible for the coordination of all trades which included asbestos abatement, replacement or the ceiling, acoustical treatment, lighting systems, mechanical and electrical systems. During the construction phase, we acted as Owner Rep for the UN to expedite the asbestos removal and installation of the new ceiling and lighting by providing the contractors on-site monitoring and assistance. The entire project was complete within the 16-week construction schedule set forth by the UN - just in time for the President's speech on September 12. 2002.

Chiller Plant Upgrade
Syska Hennessy Group performed an evaluation of alternatives to eliminate the use of CFC refrigerants for cooling the Secretariat Building. Chiller conversion, drive line retrofit and chiller replacement were evaluated. The study determined that when compared to replacing the two 1270-ton steam turbine drive chillers, over $1,000,000 could be saved by installing one new 1800-ton unit and converting one chiller to R-134a. Furthermore, the study recommended replacing the chilled water pumps with new VFD units better suited to the operating requirements. The new pumps will reduce pumping costs by more than $60,000 per year. Syska Hennessy Group subsequently designed the recommended upgrades and they will be implemented in winter 1996.

In 1993, the mechanical and electrical design for the United Nations Newsstand was prepared by our office. The project included the provision of the mechanical and electrical services required for the construction of a 600 square foot Newsstand.

In 1991, Syska Hennessy Group prepared the mechanical and electrical drawings and specifications required as part of the Medical Department Renovation on the fifth floor of the Secretariat Building. The renovation includes the upgrade and/or replacement of the existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems on this floor. Existing services and operation to remain were incorporated within this project so as to minimize interruption.

Also in 1991, Syska Hennessy Group provided design for the mechanical and electrical systems for the renovation of the 6th and 7th floor of the Headquarters Building. The renovation included new open and private offices, copy rooms, conference rooms, etc. to be integrated with existing operations. Supplemental air conditioning was provided in critical areas or as required to facilitate off-hour operations.

In 1989, our office prepared the design of an extensive modernization of the main electrical distribution equipment serving various regions of the Headquarters Building. The project's design and construction were phased such that interruptions to normal facility operations were minimized and/or eliminated.

In 1983, Syska Hennessy Group prepared Contract Documents for various upgrades of the existing electrical system throughout the entire Secretariat Building. Work included the replacement of existing electrical feeders, panels, etc. throughout the facility as well as the provision of new power circuiting on most floors.

Security and Strengthening
The United Nations has engaged Syska Hennessy Group for the enhancement of the security systems present at the campus. Performing as Prime Consultant for the Construction Administration of the project, Syska Hennessy is overseeing a team of sub-consultants that includes architects, security consultants, lighting designers and structural engineers as part of this effort.

The high profile and historic nature of this large project as well as the technical planning and challenges have made the communication, coordination and teamwork between all of the project team members vital to the success of the project. There are critical budget and timing issues which also create a challenging atmosphere.

For obvious reasons, beyond the basics, the details of this project are confidential.

United Nations Memorial
Syska Hennessy Group provided MEP consulting engineering services for the construction of a United Nations Peace Keeper Memorial. The memorial consisted of a glass wall, a reflection pond and decorative lighting. The glass wall lists the quote “Remember here those who gave their lives for peace”, in the six languages of the United Nations. The reflection pond and walkway was built using stones with each stone representing a member nation. The memorial is supported by a below grade vault which houses electrical and plumbing services. Services to the memorial were derived from the North lawn building. Construction was completed in the Fall of 2003.
