 Biogen Idec's Phase I of their consolidated campus. Biogen Idec, Inc., a leader in the development of targeted immunotherapies
for cancer and autoimmune diseases, consolidated their three separate
locations into one research campus. Their objective was to create
a collaborative workplace that would facilitate innovation.
Phase I of the 3-phase project includes two office buildings,
two labs, and a commons building totaling 380,000 sq. ft. The campus
features a façade of colored sandstone, designed to evoke
an Italian hill village, an arroyo with a water feature, and an
elevated glass bridge connected the administrative and lab buildings.
The program also included:
- BSL-2 suites
- Radio isotope suites
- Vivarium
- Research labs
- Corporate offices
- Data center
- Cafeteria and fitness center
The design of the vivarium posed challenges for the design team.
Late in the design stage, Biogen Idec changed the scope of the
vivarium and increased its size significantly to 10,000 sq. ft.,
doubling its original capacity. Typically the building infrastructure
to support a vivarium of this size would have required the design
of interstitial space. With the larger size, and existing building
footprint, this was not possible. Syska’s engineers were
able to fit the support equipment within in the ceiling space and
the result is a world class vivarium.
The first phase was complete in October 2004 and features the
west coast’s first on-site biotechnology laboratory classroom
for local students. Phases 2 and 3 will double the size of the
campus.
