The Federal Office Building prior to renovation.
Rendering of the what the building will look like after the work
has been completed.
Syska Hennessy Group in joint venture with Neumann Smith & Associates
and HDR, designed the renovation of a 10-story Federal Office Building
at 536 South Clark Street, Chicago, IL Renovation includes architectural,
structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, security
and vertical transportation systems upgrades, and tenant build out
from the Lower Level through the 5th Floor. This modernization will
enable the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (INS) to consolidate its operations in the city
of Chicago.
The newly renovated facility will reflect the dignity with which
this nation welcomes its new citizen applicants and will evoke
community pride. The facility will present a favorable first impression
of our Federal Government and be delivered in accordance with GSA's
Design Excellence and Construction Excellence Programs.
The facility will be substantially modernized and utilize techniques
of sustainable design, energy conservation and recovery and efficient
use of existing facilities. In addition, the building will demonstrate
state-of-the art engineering practice throughout. The design incorporates
strategies for the “office of the future”.
Ceilings will be exposed concrete deck, providing an increased
floor to ceiling height (approximately 11 feet) and allowing natural
daylight to penetrate deeper in the office space. Coupling the
introduction of daylight deep into the office space is the implementation
of daylight dimming controls designed to dim the lighting when
the natural daylight provides the appropriate footcandle level.
Indirect/direct lighting will be employed which creates a more
appealing office environment for the worker. The project is seeking
certification under the US Green Building Council’s LEED® Green
Building Rating System.
