Hawaii Convention Center
|
Syska Hennessy Group is part of the winning team for the 200 million
dollar design/build competition for the State of Hawaii's new Convention
Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The team was selected from four contestants
on the basis of technical excellence and aesthetic design.
The Convention Authority set an ambitious schedule for the construction
which required completion at least one year earlier than a traditionally
delivered public works project. The center opened on schedule and
was a prototype of design/build and true partnering. Involved were
state and local governments and private industry all collaborating
together in new ways. Principals and team members of each firm were
committed to the partnering effort. The time each devoted truly
made Hawaii's new landmark center a success.
The 800,000 sq. ft. facility includes 200,000 sq. ft. of on-grade
exhibit area, 150,000 sq. ft. of meeting rooms, a 36,000 sq. ft.
ballroom, 240,000 sq. ft. of lobbies and prefunction space, a loading
dock with space for 20 trucks, two theaters, parking for 800 cars
and kitchen and concession space.
Innovative Design/Build Process:
Syska Hennessy Group's contract was held by four subcontractors
to the general contractor (electrical, mechanical, plumbing and
communications). Because of daily communication between Syska and
the M.E.P. subcontractors, this arrangement made the communication
links extremely efficient, resulting in a smooth, well coordinated
project.
