Minneapolis Convention Center
|
The 800,000 sq. ft. Minneapolis Convention Center was built in
1989 and has already become a City landmark. Situated alongside
Grant Street on the southern edge of the City's central business
district, the project consists of 300,000 sq. ft. of exhibit area,
30,000 sq. ft. of ballroom area, and 50,000 sq. ft. of meeting rooms.
In addition there are full restaurant and catering facilities.
The success of the convention center prompted the City of Minneapolis
to plan for expansion, less than ten years after the its completion.
In early 1999 the foundation construction began on the expansion.
The fast paced design and construction effort required phased bid
packages and early coordination between the architectural, structural,
mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection trades.

Syska Hennessy Group assisted to implement the schedule by providing
early-stage consulting regarding the infrastructure needs for the
power and HVAC systems. Based on Syska's experience with convention
center needs, the existing cooling and heating plants were utilized
without adding to their capacities - saving the City over two million
dollars.
The fire protection system that Syska Hennessy Group designed
also contributed to huge savings. -The City allowed protection of
the Lower Exhibit Hall steel truss members by a system deemed equivalent
to traditional fire proofing encasement. Through the use of a zoned
deluge system, approximately 1.5 million dollars of savings was
realized.
