San Diego Convention Center
|
San Diego had outgrown their 10-year old convention center and
was loosing the bigger conventions because they could not accommodate
them. San Diego, a growing and popular destination, needed to expand
their center to attract these larger shows and bring additional
visitors and revenue to their City. They chose a design/build expansion
to add 800,000 sq.ft. to the existing facility.
The San Diego Convention Center now totals 2.5 million sq.ft. and
can attract a larger convention market by providing additional exhibit
halls, pre-function spaces, meeting rooms, and ballrooms.
During the expansion, we also increased the efficiency of their
central plant by augmenting the existing gas fired chiller with
electric chillers. This provided an opportunity for optimum fuel
selection.

In addition to the expansion, we helped the convention center on
another project, preparing for the highly publicized 1996 Republican
National Convention. For this convention the facility was facing
an increase in television network coverage. Syska Hennessy Group
provided consulting engineering services to upgrade the facility
to accommodate the increased television coverage. We added cooling
for major network broadcasting anchor booths, and for the conversion
of garage parking to press offices. In addition, we provided a request
for proposal for contractors, and the schematic design for the contractor
installation of emergency power.
We have enjoyed a long relationship with the Port of San Diego
and the Convention Center since we assisted on the design of the
original facility which was completed in 1989.
