Specialty Laboratories turned to Syska Hennessy Group when they
decided to consolidate their operations from numerous buildings
in Santa Monica to one new 230,000 sq. ft. comprehensive facility
in Valencia. The development would incorporate a BSL-3 suite, R&D
laboratories, clinical reference laboratories, executive offices,
auditorium, and cafeteria. Specialty Laboratories, Inc., a full-service,
clinical reference laboratory, is the largest single source of
specialized laboratory testing in the United States, testing blood,
urine and forensic samples from across the Country. The company
needed Syska Hennessy Group to design building systems (mechanical,
electrical plumbing, fire protection and security) for their new
facility with an emphasis on 3 key elements: efficiency, reliability,
and 24 x 7 uptime. The biggest challenge was to the need to design
systems that would serve both the laboratory areas of the facility
that required 24 x 7 uptime and the office areas that did not require
continuous operation. In addition, the client’s efficiency
and reliability requirements needed to be met within the project’s
fast track schedule (24 months from start through construction)
and budget constraints.
