Chilling Out High-Density Server Farms

In the Internet economy, speed matters. As companies rush to process data faster and more efficiently, they are purchasing more powerful computer servers and placing them into existing data centers. Major problems occur as this new generation of slimmer, faster servers consumes more energy, thereby giving off more heat. Multiply the heat by the increased number of servers needed for a growing business and you get an overheated data center that eventually shuts down.

Recognizing the need for more reliable and scalable cooling methods for high-density server farms, Syska Hennessy Group’s High Density Cooling Solutions™ allows companies to sufficiently cool their data centers as they continue to add faster, more powerful processors. Cyrus Izzo, PE, Senior Vice President and national leader of this team, talks about the research that brought about this new industry standard.

Building in More Security

Building owners and managers have been reviewing existing security systems since 9/11, paying closer attention to what’s been taken for granted over the past decade. Syska Hennessy Group vice president Terry Gillick specializes in assessing building security to design failsafe systems that protect the people and property inside and outside of a structure. He reviews how businesses can upgrade current systems to protect against unforeseen threats.

Tips on Buying the Most Reliability

How does a corporate facilities team budget the right amount to build out a state-of-the-art data center? Too often, there is a serious disconnect between what the IT team thinks they need and the actual amount of power, cooling and equipment required to keep the facility up and running 24/7. Syska Hennessy Group's Critical Facilities team has been involved with the planning, design, construction or facilities management of more than 30 million square feet of data center space over the past several years. With that experience in mind, Syska senior vice president Dan McNary offers these tips on "buying" the most reliability for your critical facility.

Should I consider on-site power generation?

Al Ribaudo, senior vice president of Syska Hennessy Group, is the firm's expert in Central Utilities and onsite utility generation. Here he discusses if using cogeneration is right for your facility.

Is my data secure enough?

Terry Gillick, vice president of Syska Hennessy Group's Critical Facilities, has provided security consulting and system engineering in some of the most sensitive locations in the country, including high-level corporate, federal and defense-related facilities. We asked him what goes into making a data center as secure as it should be.

Where is a company most vulnerable to a manmade or natural disaster?

Jim Szel, a partner with Syska Hennessy Group's Critical Facilities, is on the front lines of crisis management. He advises companies on a range of issues from recruiting the right people for crisis-response teams to planning for power blackouts that can strike at any time. In the following interview, he talks about the need for companies to prepare for all types of natural or manmade disasters.
