Fast Track Construction That Delivers
Robust, Engineered Critical Facility Systems
For Highly Technical Renovations
Research Findings: As technology races forward, data center facilities
have evolved beyond being simply critical facilities. They are
now considered Hypercritical Facilities™ and that means 24/7
reliability. Ever changing technology means regular upgrades of
infrastructure systems must be carefully planned. Our Critical
Facilities Team clients include multiple industries: financial
services, manufacturing, utilities, state and federal government
agencies, healthcare providers, pharmaceutical and biotech. Owners
tell us that though they appreciate the speed of design build,
it does not deliver the robust engineered systems they need for
highly technical, active systems that are core to their business
operation. Those critical supporting systems could be central utilities,
critical MEP infrastructure, diagnostic and treatment areas, laboratories
or data centers.

Syska’s Outcome E²C™ is how we describe our engineering
and construction process, designed to address the deficiencies
found in our research. “E²” because engineering
is of prime importance, and “C” because you can not
separate engineering from construction and get the desired results.
The Outcome E²C™ construction process:
- Engineering and construction decisions are made together
to enhance engineered systems and field constructability
(no hand off from
designer to contractor)
- Our operational experience is leveraged
with our design and construction expertise
- Gives us the ability
to determine the best system design and expected performance
- Engineering quality is insured from onset through project
completion
- Drives early decision making and determines an early
guaranteed maximum price
- Exceeds the means and
methods of typical technical systems installation
- Drives
out uncertainty through knowledge of field issues
- Takes into
account efficient operations and the full life cycle of the
project
The results are a much smoother implementation, a savings in both
cost and time, and the robust engineered systems needed for highly
technical renovations.
Think Better Outcomes™

We begin every project with a process called “Think
Better Outcomes™” which is shown above. We designed this process
because we strongly believe this can give owners a much stronger
result than what the current industry practices are able to provide,
given such rapid change. Starting at the bottom right corner, we
work hand-in-hand with our client to describe their project’s
potential – how it functions, how it operates, the robustness
required of the engineered systems, and how the project will have
to adapt to future changes. We then challenge current industry
practice, discuss global best practices and develop, what we call,
the desired outcome. We work backwards from that outcome, assemble
the necessary stakeholders, and discuss how that outcome will best
be achieved. This is the foundation to insure that clients reach
their project potential.

What is Our Niche? As the chart above shows, we are not bricks
and sticks contractors, nor are we standard tenant improvement
contractors. In order to be potent and focused, we specialize
only on construction projects where a building system failure
can be catastrophic to operations. We know high-risk renovations
must occur while facilities remain in operation, and critical
facilities stay online. We are particularly adept at working
in live spaces, where our combined engineering and construction
team can provide a significant difference to the phasing and
choreography, schedule, quality, and function of a project. The
project size on which we focus is typically $1-$20 million.
Why We Are Different: Our in-house technical combination team
has developed this expertise over nearly a decade. Our Outcome
E²C™ process allows early equipment selections and detailed shop
drawing development which results in fewer changes and clarifications
in the field.
Clients See The Difference: Client surveys revealed a noticeable
difference by using our Outcome E²C™ process. Nine out of ten
owners surveyed commented on how the integrated engineering and
construction approach was a significant benefit to them. “The
single point of contact knows [the project] not only from the design
standpoint, but all the way through construction, commissioning
and troubleshooting. Having continuity is a big benefit on complex
technology driven projects.” They also said that the Outcome
E²C™ process “removes the conflicts between engineers
and contractors – with no finger pointing - building in a
much smoother implementation effort.”
