Critical Facilities White Paper #4
Global Best Practices Series

Security Considerations for Critical and Hypercritical Facilities™

Security has always been, and will continue to be a major concern for owners, executives, and operational managers of critical facilities, and hypercritical facilities™ alike. However, regulatory judicial and management factors should also lead organizations, particularly their board of directors and C-suites, to have periodic broad scope audits of critical facility security conducted by qualified, independent third parties. As security issues remain constant, global best practices suggest that organizations have an effective security plan already in place, and make security a fundamental consideration spanning the entire life cycle of the facility.

The first step that must be taken in such a complex process is to identify and assess all security threats and vulnerabilities including: the site, the equipment, the applications, the people and the information that comprise the internal and external world of a critical facility. Once such threats are gauged, the next step is to develop plans to further alleviate the risk of security breaches, unplanned downtime, and disruption of service.

A successful, comprehensive plan incorporates measures for physical security, security of information, and operational security in order to achieve set security target levels, avoid unbalanced capital expenditures, and ultimately lessen liabilities. Every factor which impacts the ultimate supply/service chain to the customer must be considered. With such methodical and systematic planning, not only can security goals be achieved, companies oftentimes also gain a competitive edge in their specific industries.
