Critical Facilities White
Paper
Special Edition
Mission Critical vs Critical Mission Thinking
Many sectors of today’s global economy are dependent
upon reliable and secure critical facilities. Such facilities
go by various names, including network operations center, command
and control centers, electronic data processing centers, or
simply “mission critical” operations. The combination
of hardware, software, operating controls, physical environment
and human resources must be appropriately balanced and aligned
to provide uninterrupted availability and appropriate levels
of security. Downtime and/or security breaches can have profound
implications on the host enterprise, causing consequential
damages to customers and other segments of the community.
While mission critical thinking has dominated the management
approach of many enterprises, today’s business environment
merits an evolution in thinking and business practices to critical
mission thinking.
This white paper is prepared as an executive level overview
of the factors that should encourage organizations to progress
to critical mission thinking, and specifically to:
- Educate board members and senior level executives
- Explain the differences between “mission critical” and “critical
mission” thinking
- Illustrate how critical mission thinking can lead to risk
mitigation, business improvement and competitive advantage
- Present an approach for enterprise-oriented critical mission
business improvement and risk management
