Aero/Astro Laboratory, Building 33
Syska Hennessy Group completed the renovation of MIT's Building
33 which is a five-story special projects building housing laboratories,
classrooms, student workshop areas and a library. The Aero/Astro
Laboratory includes classrooms and facilities for a wide-range of
research projects including the study of the environmental impact
of aerospace systems, research on the technological, operational
economic and management problems associated with the engineering
of future air transportation systems.
Syska Hennessy Group engineering design included HVAC, auto-control
electric power, lighting, fire alarms, fire suppression and accommodations
for tel/data for this unique space. A special challenge arose from
the fact that the building had no air conditioning. This meant that
the facility was without the necessary space that existing ductwork
would have provided so that designed tolerances were within one-half
inch. The entire design process required very close coordination
with the architect.
Buildings 37 & E55 - Fire Alarm System Replacement
We designed the complete fire alarm system replacement in a classroom/laboratory
building and high-rise married student housing with upgrade to current
code and ADA standards. Installation of new system was phased to
allow the buildings to operate normally during the renovation.
Buildings 48 & W91 - Emergency Power Upgrade
We designed for addition of diesel driven emergency generator and
replacement of normal electrical service entrance equipment in two
academic buildings. Our work is phased to allow the buildings to
continue to operate normally while the existing equipment is replaced
and the new generators installed.
Building 13, Vannevar Bush Building Center for Materials Science
Laboratory
Facility Assessment Survey of mechanical and electrical systems
and master plan for upgrading this 180,000 sq. ft. Materials Science
Laboratory Building originally constructed in 1964. Numerous renovations
and lab relocations have been made in this building due to the changing
nature of research facilities. The survey provided the means for
planning future renovations and upgrades for central systems in
order to avoid costly repairs and potentially hazardous conditions.
Crystal Physics Lab - 3rd Floor
We designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection
systems for research laboratory, includes VAV hood exhaust.
