Student Recreation Center
Syska Hennessy Group designed the building systems for these
two highly successful Student Facilities on the University of California,
Irvine campus. We were first selected to design the $10M Donald
Bren Events Center, and then were once again selected to design
the new Student Recreation Center, voted for and paid for by the
students at UCI as a gymnasium accessible to the entire student
body.
Student Recreation Center
This new Student Recreation Center was voted for and paid for by
the students at UCI because the athletes dominated the existing
center, Crawford Hall, and the students wanted a gymnasium for
everyone. The 90,000 sq. ft. stand-alone building will be outside
the Campus on California Street. The facility will have four
basketball courts, an outdoor pool, activity rooms, fitness rooms,
locker rooms, racquetball courts, showers, administration offices
and a laundry room. The central plant will supply 400 tons from
two 200-ton chillers. Five air-handling units will supply constant
air volume to all gymnasium areas. UCI has a requirement for
this building to be 30% more efficient than Title 24 requirements.
Donald Bren Events Center
Donald Bren Events Center
Syska Hennessy Group provided mechanical and electrical design
for a 5,800 seat, 91,000 sq. ft. intercollegiate, athletic, concert
and special events facility. An elegantly designed, modern arena
on the campus of the University of California, Irvine, the Bren
Events Center provides an exciting and prestigious location in
Orange County for a full array of musical, performance, exhibition,
sporting, and other public events. The flexible design of the
Bren Events Center can accommodate a wide range of events including:
concerts, lectures, large meetings, banquets, and exhibitions...the
only limit is your imagination.
The Center is built on two levels and features state-of-the-art
design in lighting, sound system, and acoustic engineering. Nearby
parking facilities provide convenient parking for Events Center
guests. A full service ticket office and two permanent concession
stands are located on the concourse level. Three main entrances
to the Center provide smooth crowd flow, and another entrance on
the arena level can be reserved for security or controlled access
needs. Through the use of retractable seating and Safeguard protective
floor covering, the Center can be easily converted to stage a variety
of events including concerts, lectures, performing arts, and sporting
events.
