LACCD, East Los Angeles College
Performing and Fine Arts Complex
Monterey Park, CA

Syska designed the building systems for the new 169,000 sf multi-media and performing arts complex at East Los Angeles College. The complex will house the Vincent Price Art Gallery, one of the largest and most prominent art collections for any community college in the world, which will also house traveling art exhibits and is designed to meet national museum standards. It also houses an art department, theater department, dance department, and music department along with a 350-seat performance theater.

Currently, the art curriculum is housed throughout the campus in several locations making it a challenge to be a singular entity. Older spaces are incapable of meeting current space and technology needs. The project is designed to consolidate, modernize and create an environment for the instruction of the entire art curriculum. The site picked for the new building is positioned to give an exciting first impression of the campus and along with the Museum will be a gateway to the community.

The project team applied sustainable building design principles and standards to achieve a LEED Silver rating. This marks the first major construction on campus in more than 50 years and is part of the largest publicly funded green building programs in the nation.

The Performing and Fine Arts Complex project is a winner of the 2009 Haworth/Unisource Solutions Community Impact Award being granted to the Los Angeles Community College Districts Builds Green Program by the Los Angeles Business Council.
