ICN Pharmaceuticals was a global, research-based, specialty pharmaceutical company that discovered, developed, manufactureed and marketed pharmaceutical products, primarily in the areas of neurology, dermatology and infectious disease. Late in 2002, after various acquisitions of other smaller research companies, the company embarked on an aggressive facility expansion plan at their Costa Mesa facility. In 2006, they merged with Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
As a fast-track design-build project, Syska provided engineering services to add a new central plant to support the existing facility and planned future expansions. The scope of work also included the renovation of existing laboratory and support space to accommodate state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and updated mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Specialty spaces within this area included a 3,000 sf BSL-3 suite and a 5,000 sf vivarium.
Occupants did not leave the facility during the lab renovation. This project element required the team to develop phasing strategies to allow the company to continue operations, safely, during the completion of this project. The lab also had limited space for new air handlers and required extensive coordination during installation. Final lab systems fit within the space and were also flexible to support future programmatic changes or facility expansions. Syska's extensive coordination and attention to detail helped the team achieve the client's design goals, aggressive schedule and fixed budget.
