City of Santa Monica Big Blue Bus Sustainable Transit Maintenance Facility
Santa Monica, CA

Syska Hennessy Group, along with HOK, was selected to design the City of Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus Expansion project. The new 66,000 sf sustainable transit Big Blue Bus maintenance facility is part of an expansion project that included the demolition of the existing 40-year-old maintenance facility and development of a reorganized, more efficient bus yard. The project was extensively planned and multi-phased so that daily bus operations could be maintained while the project was under construction.

In keeping with the City of Santa Monica's commitment to a sustainable environment, many eco-friendly and energy efficient features were implemented. The 80-kilowatt photovoltaic system comprised of 600 roof-mounted PV panels will help reduce energy costs by up to 15% a year. An urban runoff system will filter storm water and reclaimed water will be used for landscape irrigation. Energy efficient measures were implemented, including minimum energy water heaters and lighting. Workspaces were designed to utilize natural ventilation as much as possible.

Syska Hennessy Group, in collaboration with a third-party PV vendor, designed the infrastructure for an 80KW PV system.
