Intrepid National Armed Forces, Rehabilitation Facility
San Antonio, TX
The Brooke Army Medical Center faced n urgent need for expanded facilities for the rehabilitation of soldiers injured on the battlefield. With state-of-the-art technology, the facility allows soldiers to rehabilitate with the goal of returning to their pre-injury condition and capabilities.
This facility harnesses leading edge technology to provide military amputees with improved rehabilitation resources through the use of advanced prosthetics, computerized and video monitoring, biomechanical studies and advanced physical training therapy methods. Clinical space houses areas for fitting, testing and adjusting advanced prosthetics and provide areas for research. Space is provided for multi-disciplined research and treatment teams of physicians; orthopedic surgeons, prosthesis, physical therapists, occupational therapists and administrative support staff.
Syska provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection consulting engineering services for this $50 million dollar facility. Supported entirely by private funds, attention to budget and schedule restrictions were essential. The design of MEP systems had to support high tech rehabilitation equipment while demonstrating flexibility to adapt to evolving medical practices. Additionally, Syska's design meets both the ADA Accessibility Guidelines and Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Standards guidelines. In recognition of the team collaboration and innovative engineering design, this project received an Honor Award from the Metro-Washington ACEC chapter.
