City University of New York, Lehman College - New Science Building
Bronx, NY

The City University of New York has a vision of establishing itself as a "science power house." They targeted their Lehman Campus to construct a new science facility to host some of their biology and chemistry programs as well as provide for the research needs of their faculty.

Syska Hennessy Group was chosen as the MEP engineer and sustainable design consultant. When completed, the 68,000 sf facility will host a variety of classrooms, lecture halls, chemical labs, and biology labs. The project is currently LEED silver certified but is moving forward with the goal of achieving LEED platinum certification.

The Syska team is implementing a variety of sustainable features into the design. The building will feature a solar pre-heat plate to reduce the energy consumed while heating water. Water will be captured on the green house roof, used for irrigation, and then re-used as lavatory water. Since the facility uses 100% outside air, humidity is a problem for the lab spaces. An innovative heat pipe will be wrapped around the chill water coil to reduce the humidity in the air and, additionally, support the strict air environment needed for laboratory space.
