Santa Monica College-Liberal Arts Building
Santa Monica, CA

Opened in 1929 with just 153 students, Santa Monica College has grown to a thriving campus with approximately 30,000 students. The new Santa Monica College Liberal Arts Building is a multi-structure facility consisting of two wings. Phase One is comprised of a two level below-grade and three level above-grade building and is approximately 18,000 sf. Phase Two is approximately 32,000 sf. The new building named the Humanities and Social Sciences Building has 22 “smart” classrooms, faculty offices, a lab and tutoring space.

Syska implemented sustainable elements in this project, including high performance glazing, daylight responsive controls in classroom spaces, occupancy sensors in enclosed offices, high efficiency HVAC equipment and water efficient fixtures. The Santa Monica College building does not employ the use of mechanical cooling due to its proximity to the ocean. Natural ventilation from the ocean breeze is used to cool the campus.

The building has earned LEED® Silver certification. In addition, our third party commissioning team was selected to provide design phase commissioning services as well as LEED commissioning services.
