Howard Hughes Medical Institute - Headquarters Expansion
Chevy Chase, MD
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an internationally known scientific research institution with its headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Due to growth and a recent failure of back-up systems, HHMI decided to renovate their headquarters campus to provide more space, better security and greater reliability.
The expansion allows for the addition of six conference rooms, a tiered meeting room, library, and several thousand feet of executive and administrative space. To prepare for this, Syska provided an energy analysis to determine the optimal strategy for energy production and storage on the HHMI campus. This study recognized that new energy-saving equipment was more capable of realizing target consumption cost savings than the ice storage systems in use. As a result of this study, a bi-fuel generator will be installed that simultaneously burns both diesel and natural gas and has enough power to support the entire building.
Other sustainable features were explored and implemented throughout the design. Daylight harvesting with the use of light-shelves will provide natural light to the occupants. An Electrical Management and Control System (EMCS) will efficiently control the artificial lighting in the building by reducing energy consumption while providing the adequate amount of light needed at each time of day. By including these and other design features, the facility hopes to achieve a LEED Gold rating.
