Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science & Art
New Academic and Science Lab Building
New York, NY
It was imperative that Cooper Union Academic Center adhere to the tenets of the institution by providing free and accessible
education while continuing its proud history of being a cultural and intellectual destination. This new research, academic and cultural center features a four story atrium and is an innovative and technologically advanced building with pioneering sustainable features.
As Engineer of Record, Syska Hennessy collaborated with IBE Engineers to design and implement a Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) infrastructure
that would provide flexible design for the next 100 years. Through a highly collaborative process, progressive sustainable strategies were implemented
to support Cooper Union's rigorous requirement for an energy-efficient and sustainable, maintainable building.
Some of the innovative engineering applications included: radiant heating and cooling ceiling panels, an airside energy recovery system, demand-controlled ventilation, a double-wall façade, a green roof and building management system (BMS) controls. This resulted in a LEED®-NC Platinum rating by the U.S. Green Building Council. This project is also the recipient of the 2010 AIA NY Chapter Architecture Design Award and the 2009 AIA NY Chapter BIM Award Citation.
Syska provided additional services, including MEP and Fire Protection (all phases), Security, Audio Visual Systems, IT and cogeneration conceptual
design. Cooper Union is the first Platinum LEED Certified Academic Laboratory Building in New York City.
