Syska Hennessy’s Aquatic Life Systems Group designed a life system for the Taipei Zoological Park's Polar Wildlife exhibit. This was the Zoo's first such system and there was considerable concern over the maintenance staff's ability to effectively operate the system. In response, our Facilities Management Division (FMD) got involved in the project to create O&M documentation for this new system.

The Polar Wildlife system involved a manually operated pumping and filtration system that provided salt water to two tanks that hold a combined 74,000 gallons of water and three varieties of penguin. Because this system's extensive manual operations revolved around a multitude of valves, we had labels made for each valve based on system flow diagrams.

We then labeled the valves ourselves as we conducted the field verification of our documents during the final construction punch list inspection. This ensured that no valves were mislabeled and that they coordinated exactly with our documents. In addition, we performed studies to determine optimal staffing and manpower needs for this labor-intensive system.

After designing the O&M manuals, it was necessary to have them translated into Chinese so that the zoo's staff could actually make use of them. We brought in a translator to convert our documents to Chinese and then had one of our engineers who is Taiwanese to read the manual to assess the accuracy of the translation. The aquatic group took the final O&M manuals and used them to train the filtration system operators.

The integrated effort between the Aquatic Systems Group and FMD enabled highly efficient data collection as well as direct on-site verification of our data. As a result our O&M documentation exactly matched the actual field conditions of the system. The O&M Manual is used by both the maintenance staff and management to help provide a safe and reliable environment for the animals in this new aquatic exhibit.
