Wheatley Building on the University of Massachusetts, Boston campus.
The Syska Hennessy Group is providing new sprinkler systems and fire
alarms throughout the Science and Wheatley buildings on the campus
of the University of Massachusetts, Boston. These buildings are classified
as high-rises and encompass approximately one million square feet.
When these buildings were originally built, they were not required
to be provided with sprinklers. Per the order of Massachusetts General
Law, however, this has changed and sprinklers are now a requirement
for these buildings.
The one million square feet of Science and Wheatley Buildings was
designed with drop-ceilings. Installation of traditional ceiling
sprinklers would have resulted in substantial ceiling disruption
as well as high replacement costs. Our solution has been to design
exposed piping and side-wall sprinklers throughout most of the buildings.
This design has given us the flexibility required to minimize ceiling
disruption and has resulted in savings to our client of approximately
one million dollars.
Other services we are providing include: new double check valve
assemblies to protect the campus water loop from contamination;
new sprinkler systems for the main/mechanical electrical rooms and
shops, which previously had no sprinkler protection; and electrical
transformer room/vaults. Rooms containing large switchgear equipment
will be protected with smoke detectors.
For the Wheatley Building, a new dry sprinkler system will be provided
for garage level G-2, while in the Science building, the parking
area, lobby and few small rooms at level G-1 and G-2 are protected
by an existing dry-pipe sprinkler system.
