view of the new student complex at the New Jersey Institute of
Technology
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is developing a
new Student Center Complex where both students and faculty will
enhance the educational experience through social interaction and
shared knowledge. The new Complex will include an 80,000 GSF addition
to the existing Hazell Student Center, the construction of a new
120,000 GSF Academic Building (connected via bridge to the Student
Center Complex addition) and the renovation and expansion of the
existing Hazell Student Center.
The Student Center Complex will be the new beacon for NJIT and
will include such spaces as student meeting rooms, full production
kitchen and dining facility, student lounge/bar, ballroom, computer
classrooms, lecture halls, board/video game rooms including bowling
alley, etc. The engineered systems serving these facilities include
electrical centrifugal chillers to produce chilled water, modular
gas fired hot water boilers, variable air volume air handling
units. The project has undergone a Sustainable Design analysis.
While
the requirements fall short of LEED® Certification, the systems
provided are highly energy efficient and user friendly. High
efficiency lighting, motors, and variable frequency drives have
been incorporated.
Maximum daylight lighting and lighting control systems have been
implemented and a solar heating system shall be incorporated
and used to preheat domestic water.
