The Asian Art Museum opened its doors to their new location in
March 2003. The previous tenant of this 1917 Beaux Arts
style building was the San Francisco Main Library. The building
is recognized as one of the most important historic structures
in San Francisco.
Project Features:
- 29,000 sq ft of gallery space
- Three multi-purpose classrooms
- Education Resource Center
- Largest museum in United States devoted exclusively
for the arts of Asia
- Events Facilities
Innovations and Solutions:
Designed by the renowned architect, Gae Aulenti, the focus
of the design was to create a new heart for the building
while still keeping the integrity and historic elements
of the original building’s
framework. Syska Hennessy designed the Vertical Transportation
Systems Elevators and Escalators to reflect the historic
nature of the building. New passage elevators were
created to allow visitors to observe the Galleries
and Exhibits while traveling between floors. Special accommodations
for disabled patrons were incorporated into the design.
