For the past ten years Amylin Pharmaceuticals has been dedicated
to the development of medications for the treatment of diabetes
and other related conditions. One of their current developments
is the Exenatide LAR compound, a once-a-week treatment for Type
II diabetes. After years of clinical trials, Amylin is ready to
begin production of this prescription therapy. Syska is providing
the engineering design for the FDA-validated quality control and
stability testing laboratory for production.
Syska has been challenged to complete services for the new laboratory
and central plant within an aggressive 12-month schedule. The laboratory
space is located within an existing facility with rooftop load capacity
limitations. The team is evaluating potential solutions to provide
the complex systems necessary for the state-of-the-art facility while
limiting the renovations to the existing structure. The plans also
require flexible building systems and central plant capacity capable
of supporting the facility's current program and future unknown uses.
Additional design considerations include economizers, heat recovery
and VAV systems to support energy-efficiency.
