Rendering of the Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance Facility.
The City of Santa Clarita’s municipal transit system decided
to convert their entire bus fleet from diesel to Compressed Natural
Gas (CNG) in an effort to improve air quality in the Santa Clarita
valley. With their existing maintenance facility out of date,
under sized, and insufficient for supporting CNG expansion, Santa
Clarita Transit needed to update their systems and build a new
maintenance facility headquarters. Consistent with their
effort to operate in an environmentally conscious manner, the project
pursued a LEED® rating.
Syska Hennessy Group was brought on board because of our experience
and understanding of sustainable design and the LEED® system. We
provided cost effective, energy efficient, and innovative solutions,
all within a conventional and fixed budget.
The Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance Facility includes a 22,000
sq. ft. administration building, a 25,000 sq. ft maintenance building,
a bus wash facility, a CNG fueling island for City buses, and publicly
accessible CNG fueling station. The $18 million facility is
designed to accommodate over 100 buses and nearly 160 staff, with
room for future expansion. In addition to the building
systems engineering, Syska Hennessy Group provided LEED® documentation
and management, coordinating with a third party commissioning agent
and with the local utility provider for system analysis and utility
incentives. The project has earned a LEED® Gold
Certification.
