Situated on 15 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains, the Skirball
Cultural Center is a resource for the community providing a museum,
as well as cultural programs, concerts, lectures, performances,
readings, symposia, film and video screenings, and educational
offerings for adults and children. Syska worked with renowned architect,
Moshe Safdie, on the 30,000 sq. ft. addition to the Center that
includes a multi-functional 6,000 sq. ft. hall. The Hall is designed
with the flexibility to accommodate a banquet for 400 people or
a lecture event with a seating capacity of 800.
Syska’s challenge on the project was in the design of HVAC,
lighting and lighting controls that are tightly integrated with
the architectural design and structural systems. The design team
worked closely with one another to take into account that the space
would accommodate such events as concerts, lectures, performances,
reading, film and video screenings, etc.

In addition, energy efficiency and environmental responsiveness
design methods were recognized and met by utilizing day lighting
and artificial lighting where applicable. An automated shading
device is used to allow for the hall to be partially shaded with
a second shade that allows for a complete ‘black out’ for
performances. Other unique features include the design of wireless
lighting control for event lighting
