Santa Monica Main Library
Syska Hennessy was the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Engineer-of-Record
for the City of Santa Monica’s new main library. Syska Hennessy’s
scope of work for the project included working closely with the
City and the rest of the design team to establish sustainability
goals and to implement green building strategies. The project
has been awarded Gold Certification under the USGBC LEED® Green
Building Rating System.
Sustainable design strategies that have been incorporated into
the project include:
- High efficiency, high-performance lighting systems;
- Daylighting with automatic dimming lighting
controls;
- High performance building envelope;
- High efficiency HFC (R-134a) chiller plant;
- Variable primary flow chilled water distribution
- Underfloor air distribution;
- Demand-controlled ventilation;
- 10-KW rooftop photovoltaic system;
- Water-efficient low-flow plumbing fixtures;
- 200,000-gallon subterranean storm water cistern
system;
- Detained storm water will be diverted for landscape irrigation;
Now completed, the $40 million, Santa Monica Library includes
two stories totaling 110,000 sq. ft. above three levels of subterranean
parking. In addition to the traditional library programs and materials,
the Santa Monica Library also houses a central courtyard, a
library café, a computer lab, an auditorium, and various
public meeting spaces, as well as space for the Santa Monica
Historical Society Museum.
This project was awarded the 2006 Sustainability Award by the Los Angeles Business Council.
