Syska Hennessy Group was selected by the Pentagon Renovation Office
(PenRen) to participate in the “Phoenix Project”, the
reconstruction of 450,000 SF in Wedges 1 and 2 that were damaged
by terrorist activity on September 11, 2001. Our firm provided
engineering design services for the HVAC, Electrical, Telecommunications
and Security systems. This nationally prominent project was designed
and constructed in an accelerated manner in order to open for business
on 9/11/02.
The entire project was a very interactive, fast track process,
and required extensive commitment of personnel overtime and supporting
resources. This project was managed in a unique manner to meet
the aggressive completion date, while maintaining restrictive
document handling procedures (no posting or e-mailing of design
documentation
among other restrictions) as well as sensitivity to the historical
nature of this landmark building.
Syska’s first involvement in the project commenced
immediately after the Federal Bureau of Investigation concluded
its investigation
of the site as a crime scene. Engineers conducted field investigations
of existing conditions in the entire area of the Pentagon destroyed
as a result of the September 11 attack.
The second phase of this effort commenced in January of 2002,
Syska was contracted to perform engineering design services, preparation
of contract documentation, and provide construction administration
services for HVAC, electrical, security and telecommunications
infrastructure for the Wedge 1 portion of the damaged area. This
involved the development of comprehensive core and shell contract
documents including significant upgrade to the pre-September
11 design to allow for improved flexibility, redundancy, and defensibility.
