Syska Hennessy Group Designing Systems for Mixed-use Facility in Saudi Arabia
Syska Hennessy Group is designing the building systems for the residential and community buildings of the King Abdullah Petroleum Study and Research Center (KAPSARC). Scheduled to be completed in 2011, this new mixed-use development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia will be designed to achieve LEED Platinum rating.
Located minutes away from the King Khalid International Airport, the KAPSARC development will comprise of approximately 3.8 million square feet (494 acres), including residential, community and commercial space as well as petroleum research facilities. While HOK is the executive architect for this project, Syska Hennessy is the executive engineer, providing master planning for the entire site through to the design development stage. The project is being carried out by Aramco, the state-owned petroleum company.
An overriding objective for the project is to enhance Saudi Arabia’s preeminent role as an environmentally responsible energy supplier by establishing a sustainable mixed-use community and preeminent petroleum research facility that is reflective of the country’s prominence in the global energy industry. Land use will be optimized by installing 8,000 photovoltaic panels on 12.5 acres, which will ultimately produce 2.5 million watts of power per hour. Solar thermal domestic hot water in the buildings, as well as water recycling systems will also be incorporated. Additional sustainable features for the project will include a high performance skin and an energy recovery system.
The Syska Hennessy design packages will develop the outside plant infrastructure connectivity for the project. The multi-faceted scope of work the firm is providing includes mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, information technology as well as sustainable consulting services for a variety of facilities, including an indoor pool, residential and, apartment buildings, a recreation center, basketball courts, library, community meeting rooms, retail spaces, and community mosque. In addition, Syska Hennessy is designing technology entrance rooms in each facility, a satellite dish farm, satellite facility, and distributed antenna system, outlining fiber connectivity between buildings via ductbank routing, conduits and vaults. Furthermore, Syska Hennessy provided schematic design for the photovoltaic farm, as well as the design development for a proposed underground electrical distribution system in integration with the photovoltaic power. Currently, Syska Hennessey is consulting with one of the Kingdom’s local engineering firms to complete the design of a central chilled water plant (which will include a one million gallon tank for thermal storage) and chilled water distribution system.
In order to maintain the goal of LEED Platinum for the entire development, Syska Hennessy is also setting some of the sustainable design standards (outlined in their master planning of the site) for several iconic facilities being designed by others.
