Syska Hennessy Group's New York Headquarters Achieves LEED Gold!
New York, NY – October 7, 2010, Syska Hennessy Group, a leading consulting, engineering and commissioning firm, announced that its New York headquarters has been awarded LEED® Gold, established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).
This is a great achievement for Syska Hennessy, who moved this past January to their new headquarters, located in a prominent 54-story high rise in Times Square. Taking up 65,000 square feet on two floors, the office comfortably accommodates 250 employees.
From the beginning, it was important to the firm to make their new work space sustainable and energy efficient, reflecting their ideology and reputation as a leader in high performance building design. According to Mark Yakren, PE and LEED AP, and managing director of Syska Hennessy’s New York office, “It always our goal to show our team members, our clients and our neighbors throughout the world that we support energy reduction and the prudent use of the world’s natural resources. Our New York office is just another example that underscores our commitment.”
Syska Hennessy Group provided the MEP/Fire Protection, Lighting, Technology and Audio Visual (AV) design which incorporated energy saving features. This includes fully integrated AV and Building Management Systems (BMS) that enabled the control of the conference room temperature setting (via the BMPS panel) lighting presets and motorized shades. These integrated systems could also be programmed to shut down the entire conference room system at a set time every day and/or after certain hours of inactivity. Daylighting features were incorporated throughout the space, taking advantage of natural lighting provided by glass fronts from the core offices. Water efficient fixtures were also installed. All these design elements successfully contributed to the LEED Gold certification/rating for the office, within the LEED’s Commercial Interiors category.
“Within each new LEED-certified building, we get on step closer to USGBC’s vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO & founding chair of the USGBC Green Building Council. “As the newest member of the LEED family, Syska Hennessy Group’s New York headquarters is an important addition to the growing strength of the green building movement.”
