Vali Sorell Named Chief HVAC Engineer for
Critical Facilities at Syska Hennessy Group
We would like to congratulate Vali Sorell, PE, and Associate Partner who was recently promoted to Chief HVAC Engineer for our Critical Facilities unit.
Over the years, Sorell has been a valuable public face for Syska Hennessy’s Critical Facilities team. He serves on the ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9 and the US Green Building Council’s LEED® for Data Centers Adaptation Working Group. He has consistently contributed his technical expertise at technical conferences, in published articles and in white papers. During the past several years, Sorell has served as a key member of our firm’s Critical Facilities Technical Leadership Committee as it has staked its claim at the leading edge of industry best practices. He also continues to contribute to the Green CF Data Center Committee.
With his expertise in modeling and data analysis as it pertains to thermal systems design, Sorell will focus on the development of a consistent methodology of the selection, analysis and advancement of appropriate design for CF projects. He will also collaborate closely with our High Performance Solutions team to develop methodologies for the performance of data center energy modeling when energy compliance or LEED certification is a project requirement. He will undertake the ongoing education of mechanical team members on new developments in industry best practices, and he will develop the design team’s ability to optimize selection of design elements through proper life cycle cost analysis.
Please join us in congratulating Vali Sorell on his new role!
Terry Rodgers Appointed to ASHRAE Technical Committees
We’d also like to extend congratulations to Associate Partner and CPE, CPMP, Terry Rodgers for recently being appointed to two more ASHRAE committees! In addition to being a voting member of ASHRAE’s technical committee TC9.9 “Mission Critical Facilities, Technology Spaces, & Electronic Equipment,” Rodgers has recently been appointed as a voting member of the SPC-127 and GPC 1.2 committees.
The ASHRAE SPC-127 Committee is tasked with updating and maintaining ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 127, “Method of Testing for Rating Computer and Data Processing Room Unitary Air Conditioners.” This testing standard (127-2007) is being updated to include new localized, high-density cooling equipment such as In-Row Coolers, Rear Door Heat Exchangers, and Totally Enclosed Racks to set industry standards for testing and rating the performance and energy efficiency of these new technologies. This standard will have even more importance as ASHRAE considers requiring data centers to comply with the building energy standard 90.1.
The ASHRAE GPC 1.2 Committee is developing new guidelines focused on commissioning of existing buildings and facilities. These new guidelines are Guideline 0.2, “The Commissioning Process for Existing Building Systems and Assemblies” and Guideline 1.2, “The Commissioning Process for Existing HVAC&R Systems.” These guidelines will work in conjunction with ASHRAE Guidelines 0-2005 “The Commissioning Process” and 1.1-2007 “HVAC&R Technical Requirements for The Commissioning Process” which are geared towards new buildings and construction.
